Not sure if you noticed, but it’s officially September. What?? Summer is almost over. Yeah.
I love Fall, but I’m not quite done with summer yet. I need like 4… no… 6 more weekends of biking to the beach and happy hours on sunny patios. Actually, now that I think about it, I can do all of those things in Fall (and likely Winter, as well) in this town. Silly me, I almost forgot that LA doesn’t have “seasons”.
In any case, it’s September, and that’s crazy.

Andrew and I made it to the gym on a weeknight! It actually was somewhat of a feat considering the crazy temperatures we’re currently having. The heat just zaps my energy completely. When I wake up after a not-very-restful night of sleep, I tell myself that after work I’ll want to go to the gym where it’s air conditioned. And then after work when I’m still exhausted and feeling uber sluggish, I tell myself that waking up early for a run while it’s still cool is the way to go. It’s a vicious cycle!
And to be honest, I didn’t think we were going to break that cycle last night. We were both stalling to make a decision between going to the gym and doing a home workout. In the end, we dragged ourselves to the gym, which really wasn’t terrible once we were there. It’s changing clothes and getting in the car that’s the worst part. The gym is nice and air conditioned and way cooler than our apartment. And, as is always the case with a workout, we both felt fantastic afterwards.
The moral of the story is “if you’re on the fence, drag your butt to the gym”!
Here’s a super easy side dish that I can’t take any credit for: Summer Broccoli Slaw. This three-ingredient dish is featured at Trader Joes’ sample station from time to time, and I always grab a plate when I see it. It’s light enough to be served as a summery side dish (we had it with fried chicken on Monday night) but thanks to the protein-filled black beans, it can also be the main event. It might sound odd, but I mixed some leftover broccoli slaw into my tuna salad for lunch yesterday, and it was surprisingly great.
1 bag TJ’s Broccoli Slaw
1 can Organic Black Beans
1 jar TJ’s Corn & Chile Salsa
1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl and stir to combine. Done.
