My First Pinterest Fail & WIAW #47

Good morning!

How are you? How is Wednesday treating you so far? So far my day is off to a great start, and by that I mean I’ve made coffee. So listen, I ate some food yesterday and I’d really love to tell you all about it! Interested? Then read on for this week’s edition of…

What I Ate Wednesday Tuesday 6/2/15

8:30am – Coffee! I usually drink my coffee on the move as I wander around the house each morning tidying up, and then I’ll put it somewhere pretty to take a photo.

At the moment, this is as pretty as it gets. Our house is in a constant state of semi-mess right now while all of the camping gear and other random equipment we need for our trips and travels this summer is sprawled all over the place. I’m trying to be really casual about the mess.

Mid-morning, I had Andrew’s leftover smoothie for a snack.

Andrew came home for lunch yesterday! So I had to make something more exciting than plain tuna and pickles. Around noon, I prepared avocado and tuna bagel melts…

Served with pickles and kale chips.

And then, because I really wanted to sell Andrew on the whole “coming home for lunch” idea… CAKE!

Pinterest Fail Cake

Ok, so about this cake. It’s a raspberry yogurt layer cake with lemon buttercream frosting. And it tastes just as amazing as it sounds (in my opinion). Where it’s lacking, however, is in the visual category. (Also up for debate, read on.)

To be honest, by the time I finished baking, cooling, slicing, icing, and decorating the cake, I felt pretty proud of myself and thought it looked pretty great. Keep in mind this is my first cake-baking experience, so it’s only natural that I would use an entire bottle of sprinkles and write “bye felicia” in cursive on it.

But then I pulled up the Pinterest recipe to compare mine against the original, and I immediately felt the shame of a Pinterest Fail.

Here’s my cake…

And here’s the one it was inspired by on Pinterest…

Which would you rather eat?

It’s actually pretty hilarious how terrible my cake looks in comparison, when I don’t think it looks THAT awful in real life. Plus, it tastes really good, so I’m still pleased with the end result.

Here’s the link to the Pinterest cake that I based my recipe off of. I modified with goat’s milk yogurt, in case you were wondering.

Mid-afternoon, I cut up a couple peaches. A yellow and a white to be specific.

And had a couple pieces of bacon jerky… mostly because I wanted to show this stuff to you guys (and it’s not good enough to make Friday Favorites).

For those of you who shop at Trader Joe’s, have you seen this? In theory, I like it, seeing as most jerky is just trying to be bacon anyways. I don’t need the sweet Sriracha flavor though, it just makes it taste sugary and feel sticky. It was a funny impulse purchase that I don’t think I’ll make again. But hey, bacon.

Andrew had dinner plans with a friend, and I had plans to take a kickboxing class at my gym so I was on my own for an early dinner. It was the perfect opportunity to use up some of the many leftovers in our fridge.

Roasted green beans (left), shaved brussels sprouts with chicken sausage (top), and kale pasta (right). All eaten while catching up on the SYTYCD premiere from Monday night.

All of a sudden, there is a ton of TV to watch:

Bachelorette (I’ve embraced it)
So You Think You Can Dance
Extreme Weight Loss

Question: What are you guys watching? What’s missing from my list?

Happy Wednesday and Happy Eating. See you guys later!

  1. I actually love your cake because I LOVE sprinkles! I’ve never baked a cake before so I’m really proud of you! I’ve actually had that bacon jerky before and I wasn’t a big fan. I love bacon and I love jerky but I’m just not sure I like them together…

    1. Thanks Cookie! It’s hard not to be happy about a cake (or anything really) SO covered in sprinkles.

And the bacon jerky really is a bummer! Sounds like you and I share good taste in treats 😉

  2. Girl, it’s all about what it tastes like! The photos I take are under umbrella lights, and are styled with linens and other props – it makes a big difference in how the photo turns out. Who cares what it looks like? I’d say it’s pretty damn good for a first-time cake. I’m glad it turned out great, it’s one of my favorites. Keep baking! 🙂

    1. Thanks Laura! Luckily it did taste delicious, and at least now I’ll be going into cake #2 having learned a lot. Maybe by cake #3 or #4 I’ll have something Pinterest-worthy, but no biggie if not!
